Tribute & Message From The Family

Louella Schmidt of Dover, NH passed away at home on February 6, 2020 with her family by her side. She was born on December 21, 1939 in Natchez, MS, to the late William and Corinne (Routhier) Braman and is survived by her loving husband of 58 years, Edward Schmidt. Lou grew up in the 1950's in Millville, a small South Jersey town that she always considered home. She received a B.S. in elementary education from Monmouth College, Long Branch, NJ.

She loved teaching and after marrying, taught in Indiana, New Jersey, and Massachusetts before she and Ed moved to Durham, NH, where her last position was in special education at the former Oyster River Elementary School. Lou and Ed enjoyed traveling and visited many countries including Kenya, Egypt and China. Along with two other couples, they founded and operated a middle school youth center in the old Grange Building in Durham. For decades she could be found volunteering at the St. George's thrift shop in Durham on Thursday mornings. In 1986 she started community dinners and get-togethers in the Wood Road neighborhood of Durham that continue to this day. Lou's favorite hobby was genealogy. Her years of research led to the discovery of and visit to Ed's ancestral home in Germany. She also greatly enjoyed snorkeling, gardening and bird watching. However, her most enjoyable times were visits with family, especially her precious grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, Lou is survived by daughter Corinne McCrone, son-in-law Martin and granddaughter Patricia of Durham; son Edward Jr., daughter-in-law Kim and grandchildren Melissa and Austin of Meriden, CT; sister Susan Holland of Kensington, CT; brother William Braman of Bristol, CT; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

At Louella's request, there will be a family graveside service at the Durham Cemetery in the spring to be officiated by Father Troy Brackett, Rector, Saint John's Anglican Catholic Church, Somersworth, NH. If desired, memorial gifts may be sent to the church at 36 Canal St, Suite 224, Somersworth, NH 03878.
